PRESS RELEASE ::: MARCUS KENNEY --- 'Fallen Animals'

JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY is proud to announce Fallen Animals, a solo exhibition of new photography by artist MARCUS KENNEY. Fallen Animals will be on view from December 2 – 31, 2013, opening with an artist’s reception on Saturday, December 7, 6-9pm, in conjunction with PhotoNOLA. This event is an annual celebration of photography in New Orleans, coordinated by the New Orleans Photo Alliance in partnership with museums, galleries and alternative venues citywide.

For his second solo exhibition at the gallery, Kenney returns to photography, his first medium.  Kenney received his MFA in Photography from SCAD in 1998 and returns to this original training to unveil the work in Fallen Animals.  Marcus Kenney is an artist who works in multiple mediums including sculpture, collage, painting and photography…all the while maintaining a cohesive examination of nature, religion, and antebellum culture.

The artist writes of this current body of photographic work:

This exhibition offers haunting portraits and landscapes as well as repeated motifs such as masks, hands and religious iconography that recall a Southern Gothic style. Displayed collectively, the imagery evokes an ominous and poignant narrative that touches on the universal themes of innocence lost, the questioning of faith, and the vulnerability of life.

Originally from rural Louisiana, MARCUS KENNEY has lived in Savannah, Georgia for the last 15 years.  He earned an MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1998. Kenney works in many mediums including collage, sculpture, paint, photography and installation. His work has been exhibited in New York, London, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, Hong Kong, Paris, New Orleans, and St. Louis. He has been included in numerous group shows, art fairs, and solo exhibitions including a major ten-year survey featuring nearly 50 works at the Telfair Museum’s Jepson Center for the Arts. A collection of his work has been published by SCAD titled “Marcus Kenney” and distributed by D.A.P. and is available for purchase. His work is in many private and public collections throughout the world including Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, Masur Museum of Art, Fidelity Investments, College Of Charleston, Savannah College Of Art and Design, Bank One, Molloy College, Jepson Center for the Arts and Telfair Museum Of Art.

Kenney has been featured in numerous publications including Art in America, ArtPapers, The New York Times, South Magazine, Oxford American, New American Painter, The Boston Globe, Atlanta Journal Constitution and New York Arts Magazine.

Marcus Kenney lives and works in Savannah, Georgia and is represented by Jonathan Ferrara Gallery.
