CBS "Sunday Morning" Features William Woodward's Dolley Madison Mural

WILLIAM WOODWARD

Dolley Madison, 2009

CBS "Sunday Morning" show, "Hail to the Chiefs’ Portraits," September 13, 2020, features William Woodward's mural "Dolley Madison Rescuing the Portrait of George Washington."

This interesting and informative program, about official presidential portraits at the White House, includes interviews with several presidential portrait painters, as well comments by past presidents when unveiling these portraits.

The historic rescue, by Dolley Madison and servant Paul Jennings, of Gilbert Stuart's famous portrait of George Washington, is frequently mentioned by commentators in the documentary and by former president, George W Bush ("the second George W.")

William Woodward's legendary mural at Madison's home, Montpelier, is the principal artistic representation of this historic event that can currently be seen on public display. The Woodward "Dolley Madison" mural is prominently displayed at James Madison's Montpelier Visitor Center in Madison, Virginia.
